Despite being grown on a volcano at an optimal altitude, due to years of war, instability and the general lack of infrastructure, it is exceptionally difficult to get specialty grade coffee out of this part of the world. In 2012 Covoya Europe built the Mukwinja washing station in an attempt to create positive change.
Virunga Coffee now operates this mill and provides the local farmers with access to a decent market, information about growing coffee and access to high quality seedlings. All this brings us back to the idea that coffee can be part of the solution, but not until farmers can catch a fair price above their cost of production.
This coffee caught our attention because we wanted to do a nice washed coffee from Africa that has some nice complex acidity. We played around quite a bit with different roast profiles trying to compare and contrast acidity and body. We like this profile because while it has nice complexity there’s still a clean present juiciness. We hope you enjoy it as well.
